Eight Things You May Not Know about IVF Success

While you may know about the process of IVF and how it can help a couple create their family, you may not know some of the specific recommendations that may help you improve your chances of success.

To follow are some specifics that you can ask your fertility doctor about when discussing your treatment plan.

1.    Reducing or eliminating alcohol from your diet is a wise move before you undergo IVF. A 2009 Harvard University study found that

Women (average age, 34) who had six drinks a week before undergoing IVF were 18 percent less likely to have a baby through IVF than those who didn't drink. And men (average age, 37) who had six drinks a week before IVF therapy were 14 percent less likely to become fathers through IVF than those who didn't drink. I do recommend, however, having the occasional glass of red wine.

2.    Don't smoke, not even vaping. Smoking not only affects the length of time it takes to conceive for both men and women, it also causes problems with pregnancy and can affect the child's health after he or she is born.

3.    Your body mass index (BMI) can play a role in your success with IVF. Being overweight or obese can affect egg quality negatively. Patients who are underweight have a slightly higher risk of miscarriage. A normal weight range is a BMI between 18.5 and 25, and some studies indicate that indicate that patients with a BMI between 19 and 30 have a higher chance of conceiving through IVF

4.    Acupuncture and other stress reduction techniques such as yoga or meditation are useful during IVF and could improve success.Patients who are in optimal health and able to manage the stresses of life and infertility are often the most successful with IVF. Complementary treatments such as acupuncture may help them succeed in their journey.

5.    Get adequate vitamin D. A large study found that in patients undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF), having a serum vitamin D level of 20 ng/mL or more was associated with a significantly greater chance of obtaining three or more high-quality embryos, successful embryo implantation and achieving clinical pregnancy.

6.    The Endometrial Receptivity Assay (ERA) is a test that can help determine the right time to perform the embryo transfer and improve the chances of implantation. We have found that the test is very helpful in patients that have experienced unsuccessful IVF due to implantation failures.

7.    Endometrial biopsy, also known as "womb scratching" is a gentle endometrial injury that is caused by scratching the woman's uterine lining several weeks prior to the embryo transfer. The procedure that has been found to help women who have good embryo quality, but have failed IVF.

8.    Persistence is a reality in IVF. One study found that for all women, the odds of having a baby on the first IVF attempt was 29.5 percent. That stayed pretty steady through their fourth attempt, but the chance of having a baby jumped up to 65 percent by the sixth attempt.

Remember, we are always here to help guide you and make recommendations that will increase your chances of creating the family you always wanted.
