Pronounced IVF Fatigue Stages
Many patients come to Dr. Laurence Jacobs in a state of fatigue due to multiple prior failed IVF attempts. Many of the Doctor’s patients have been trying to get pregnant for a year – or – longer. They are worn down both physically and mentally.
Fatigue is most pronounced during the IVF fertility medication regimen and early on in pregnancy.
- Ovulation Stimulation and Triggered Egg Release – Fertility drugs are used to stimulate a woman’s ovaries and encourage the release of mature eggs.
- Embryo Transfer – Progesterone levels are heightened to create and sustain a thick uterine lining necessary for successful embryo implantation.
- Pregnancy Fatigue – During the first few weeks after embryo transfer, women experience fatigue due to progesterone medication and pregnancy.
IVF Fatigue Management
To better manage your fatigue during IVF, it is important to listen to your body’s silent signals.
- Get plenty of quality sleep every night
- Take short naps – or just rest – when you feel tired to avoid overwhelming fatigue
- Make sure you are well-hydrated throughout the day and night
- Maintain a nutritious diet
- Exercise in moderation
- Ask for help with chores, errands, and heavy tasks
- Get a massage
- Try low impact yoga
- Undergo acupuncture before – during – after your IVF cycle
Quality Sleep Improves IVF Pregnancy Chances
The National Sleep Foundation has found through studies that sleep has a powerful influence on a woman’s reproductive hormonal system.
Sleep deprivation adversely affects your BMI, your mood, and your stress level. Your Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) level is directly affected by lack of sleep. Your FSH level should ideally be at its highest level just before you ovulate.
Enhancing your quantity and quality of sleep will increase your fertility level.

Sleep and BMI
A healthy adult Body Mass Index (BMI) is between 18.5 and 24.9. A 2016 review of studies shows that not getting enough sleep leads women to consume an average of 385 more calories the next day.

- Eat foods higher in fat
- Consume low protein foods
