Lack of adequate sleep adversely affects a woman’s fertility because it leads to low leptin levels – the hormone regulating her ovulation. Good sleeping habits will increase a woman’s fertility by raising her follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) level up to 20 percent.
Sleep and Fertility
Lack of sleep negatively impacts a woman’s ability to produce adequate amounts of reproductive hormones. This means she may have a difficult time getting pregnant. Today’s busy woman – with demands at work and home – often skimps on sleep. Improve your sleep and enhance your fertility through some very easy lifestyle changes.
Whether you are trying to get pregnant naturally – or are seeking fertility care – boosting your fertility begins with getting plenty of quality sleep.

Advice for Improving Fertility with Quality Sleep
- Implement a strict sleep schedule and stick to it
- Reduce light exposure before retiring to bed
- Implement a regular exercise program
- Improve overall diet and nutrition
- Cleanse the mind and soul
Implement a strict sleep schedule and stick to it
The human body flourishes on routine. Having a regular schedule of when you fall asleep and awake will help your body regulate its internal clock. Designate a time you normally feel tired. Making a scheduled bed time will keep you from spending a lot of time struggling to fall asleep. Keep your sleep schedule consistent on the weekends and holidays.
Reduce light exposure before retiring to bed
Darkness triggers your body to get ready for sleep. The body creates melatonin in response to darkness. Melatonin is the hormone responsible for the feeling of sleepiness. Make sure to expose yourself to natural sunlight during the day. At nightfall, turn off all electronic devices – including the television.
Implement a regular exercise program
Exercising regularly improves all aspect of your health, including your ability to get quality sleep. Sleep – in turn – enhances your fertility. As little as 10 minutes of exercise per day will improve your quality of sleep. Exercise at least three hours before your scheduled bed time to calm your metabolism.
Improve overall diet and nutrition
Your daily diet and nutrition plan also has an impact on quality of sleep. Reduce caffeine and alcohol intake. Caffeine stays in your system for up to 12 hours. Alcohol will disturb your sound sleep – similar to a sugar crash in the middle of the night. Eat larger meals during the day and lighter meals in the evening.
Cleanse the mind and soul
Relax your mind and cleanse your soul for sound, quality sleep.
