Fertility problems are often thought of as a woman’s issue. After all, women have more reproductive organs and she is ultimately responsible for carrying a pregnancy and delivering a full-term baby.
Testing for Male Fertility
Both men and women are equally likely to be suffering from a medical condition causing infertility. Therefore, both women and men are tested for their fertility. Testing for male infertility is a simple process providing a wealth of information, including preferred treatment options.
Testing for male fertility begins with a simple test, a semen analysis. In order to perform the test, a male must produce a semen sample. The sample may be provided on site at the fertility center or produced at home and delivered to the center within two hours. The sample must be kept warm during the transport. Once tested, the fertility center will have information on:
- Sperm Count – the number of sperm present in the sample
- Sperm Abnormalities – a large number of abnormal sperm is indicative of a fertility problem
- Sperm Motility – motility issues can make it difficult or impossible for sperm to reach and fertilize an egg
Sperm volume, pH, and consistency of the semen will be analyzed. This information helps to determine if a male fertility problem exists and helps to determine what steps need to be taken to address any issues.
