Selecting High Quality Embryos With PGD/PGS

PGD PGS.jpgThe phenomenal high quality embryo selection technique of Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) and Preimplantation Genetic Screening (PGS) take place in conjunction with a fresh In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) cycle. On the third day of embryo development in vitro, embryos undergo PGD/PGS by an experienced embryologist.

Preimplantation testing is an overall term describing the removal of a cell from an embryo for PGD/PGS analysis.

Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis is a method of identifying when a specific gene mutation – or – an unbalanced chromosome arrangement has been transmitted to an embryo. PGD is recommended in conjunction with IVF when one or both parents carry a gene mutation or unbalanced chromosomal rearrangement.

Preimplantation Genetic Screening (PGS) is a method of analyzing an embryo’s cell for too many or too few chromosomes.

Screening Process

  • A single cell is removed from the embryo
  • The single cell’s genetic makeup is analyzed by the embryologist
  • A decision is made as to the quality of the embryo
  • Only high quality embryos are used in completion of a fresh IVF cycle
  • Only high quality embryos are cryopreserved for a future Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET)

Enhanced Success

Through PGD/PGS, testing can be performed on embryos developing in vitro to detect abnormalities that could risk a healthy pregnancy. These low quality embryos will be screened out and not transferred or cryopreserved for future transfers.

  • Embryos with abnormal chromosome numbers
  • Embryos with a hereditary disease

PGD/PGS is a phenomenal technology used to detect:

  • Translocators
  • Hereditary Cancer
  • Genetic Mutations

The technology of PGD/PGS is also utilized for:

  • Tissue Typing
  • Gender Selection

PGD/PGS in Conjunction With IVF

The IVF process was developed to help women conceive and carry a baby to full term who otherwise could not.

The IVF procedure consists of the following steps:

  • Preparation Cycle
  • Ovarian Stimulation
  • Surgical Egg Retrieval
  • Assisted Hatching
  • Embryo Transfer
  • Embryo Transfer
  • Embryo Cryopreservation
  • Future Frozen Embry0 Transfer (FET) Cycle
